In Ajijic where I live, “Ponche guayaba” is a special fiesta drink, homemade only in quantities, you can’t get it in stores. It is a perfect food. Made with crushed guava, nuts, spices, and homemade alcohol (a little or a lot depending…) blended into a creamy base (unusual here in MX) it is absolutely delicious and even counts as a dessert as well as a protein serving. It is truly a reason to live in Mexico!

Another fun, interesting and insightful read!
In Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, the word for guayaba (guava) is xalxocotl, (pronounced “shal-SOH-koh-tul”).
Xalxocotl breaks down into: Xal (sand) and xocotl (fruit or sour thing). So, xalxocotl roughly translates to “sandy fruit,” likely referring to the tiny seeds or texture of the guava.
