The ‘Encounter’s’ between Mexican people and those of European descent have not stopped since about 1519.

Your thoughtful comments are what I love about MND, a respectful place learn from different experiences

I better understand the gentrification issue because of your personal experiences and I can apply hit here in Ajijic, also known as GringoLandia. I speak some Spanish and continue to improve, out of respect for my host country if not so I can establish better friendships

BTW I write this from Ajijic, ‘the only Pueblo Magico sin Mexicanos’. Hablo

If you owned the land, they couldn’t outbid you, but you would still have to pay the taxes, which the local government increases to the point where you can’t afford them, so as to maximize the tax income. So, what it boils down to, is that you have been living on some land that is worth more than you have been paying for it, and you would like that situation to continue. But why shouldn’t the owner of the property maximize his income from the property? You are simply asserting a “right” to something that you never bought, and don’t intend to pay for.

Many of my Mexican friends have shared their mixed feelings about other nationalities visiting or living here in Mexico. Some strongly feel that there is less advantage and more disadvantage to the idea of tourism as an economic plus. Last summer I returned to visit friends in NY after 7 years. Life there also has change

Unfortunately these issues are not unique to Mexico, they are somewhat worldwide. Sp

After living in Juriquilla for seven years, the insights are clear

As the author notes, much of the hostility is targeting U.S. citizens directly, rather than “gentrification” as a whole. I have lived in Mexico full-time for more than 6 years and part-time for 17 years. The anti-American sentiment where I live is not overt at present, but it lingers in the air. This is something I have not really felt until recently.

I traveled two month in the fall through Western Europe in the late 1980s. Spain was by far my favorite country. I loved the culture and layout of the cities. Barcelona was the only city I went to twice. When I describe cdmx to my friends I tell them it’s my favorite city in Europe because it reminds me so much of Spain. I’m grateful to have such an amazing place only an hour flight from my winter home. The sweetest honey attracts the most bees.

I’m struggling to learn better Spanish, but I’ll keep working on it (for some reason I took French in school). I truly appreciate being able to live in this beautiful country. 🇲🇽
