It’s worth mentioning that there ARE protections for indigenous rights such as intellectual property in the Americas, it’s not always public domain.

They just haven’t passed any in Mexico.

You bought something from an artisan in Mexico. They got paid and you are giving them the credit, you’re just repurposing their design, you’re not trying to sell it to Cristian Dior for mass production.

I bought a tapestry/woven piece with a design of parrots in Mexico and because I didn’t like the way it fit remade it into a top which feels better to me. So now I am wondering if this is disrespectful of the top as it first meant to be? I would appreciate responses.

Yes, let’s promote indigenous designs by indigenous manufacture. That will serve culture, strengthen the indigenous to fight the purloiners, and will discourage purloining.
