The Gulf of Mexico existed before the Chicxulub meteor impact. It was already a body of water, though its shape and size might have been different. The impact did, however, significantly alter the regional geology and may have affected the Gulf’s configuration. The impact crater is now buried beneath sedimentary rocks and is not directly visible on the seafloor.

Of further interest: “Chicxulub” is a term with roots in the Maya language, specifically from the Yucatec Maya dialect. The name “Chicxulub” translates to “pulga del diablo” or “devil’s flea” in Spanish.
