We spent three days in Taxco recently. I felt it could have been designed by Disney Imagineers. It’s now my favorite town in Mexico.

I’ve been to a few and when we lived in Cuernavaca we visited Tepotzlán many times. It does get filled with tourists.

I have been to 56 now and hope to see many more. However I am like the author and getting up there in age so I don’t have much more time to explore. I have found several pueblos that have become annual stops since I started visiting them. My favorites are Orizaba and Tepoztlan (except on weekends when it becomes a party town for Chilango’s same as Ville de Bravo). I would really like to see a publication in English of all the different Magico’s at some point.

Thanks so much for the terrific insight, Louisa! I’ve visited a handful of pueblos mágica and have added your recommendations to my list. Also, definitely agree re setting a suitable bar for the designation – there are so many beautiful, historic towns in Mexico that there would still be a long list even with a higher standard.

I’ve visited a few pueblos magicos and some of them really do deserve the designation. On the other hand, due to over tourism and unmanaged development, some of them have long lost the magic they once possessed (I’m looking at you, Isla Mujeres and Tulum, for example). SECTUR would be well advised to enforce their eligibility criteria more strctly if they want to maintain the value of the Pueblo Magico brand and not let it devolve into a marketing gimmick.

We live in San Juan del Rio, Queretaro and my wife is from Jalpan de Serra and our anniversary of 11 years was just 6/21 and we were married in the historic mission that you have pictured. Love our area and envious of all the Pueblo Magicos you have visited. Siempre!!
