Needless to say, our brownstone was like the tower of Babel as our tenants were mostly Hispanic as well as some French. From a very early age, I learned how differently Europeans as well as Latins viewed their new country. Later in life having moved to Mexico, I felt at home here as so much of what I was accustomed to as a child was part of Mexican culture. Once, while on a tour of France, a student asked a street vender for an ice cream…simply saying, “I want chocolate, please”….the vender ignored him and basically asked the next person their request while simultaneously saying to the 15 year old, “You Americans have no manners!” Well, sometimes I think that our crazy world does not allow us to “stop and smell the flowers!” Here in Mexico, it is so much easier to do so, and yes, Mexican people are ever so friendly….and yes, it definitely does rubs off.

I find it extremely endearing and refreshing. As gringos we say Buenos Dias to far more Mexicans than they say to us. But 95 percent of the time their response is warm, with a smile. We see it as a way to break the ice and engage in their politeness. I often say the Mexicans are the friendliest culture in the world. There are cultures the world over that are probably as friendly but since we have decided to move to Mexico we feel so blessed to be amongst a culture that has no issue calling a gringo an amigo or amigo on first glance. I started coming to Mexico in the winter for beaches and sun. Like most gringos. I moved here because of the people. Learn some simple phrases and even if you don’t speak Spanish you will be widely accepted.
