Bill Maher, whatever you think about him, has a New Rules called Newer, Not Better on YouTube. It touches on all of this with some savage satire. And more broadly, there is the case of AI threatening a CEO and multiple examples of AI producing fake citations for researchers. Brave new world.

My community outreach project LIBROS PARA NINOS- ZIHUATANEJO is braving the battle FOR books, against unsupervised cell phone use by children, even babies.

I have a 25 year background in advancing literacy in Mexico and beyond. I’ve been a teacher of students of all ages, including adults, for over 40 years, including Montessori for early learning and preschool. Books books books and use of traditional learning aids create heathy, elastic minds, coordination, and social skills. Interaction with parents, neighbors, nature and neighborhood…even better.

We seasoned adult pro writers can piddle around with AI as a research tool, maybe editor. The “undetected” risk is SO tremendous in a culture that has become mindlessly scroll addicted, unaware that the technology is designed to dumb them down and flood them with a cesspool of endless, meaningless activities and choices. Digital overload is a insidious narcotic. Be aware!!

I admire what MND is offering as brain gym. I may give some of it a try…to see the widgets. Especially language learning! I’m an addict…and practice daily, in real life, with real people and children, at every opportunity.

All of this…after I put down my phone and pour a nice glass of real ice tea, then take out a notebook and write a poem with a pen. No AI needed.

For those of us who grew up in the 60’s. Understanding Ai is no big deal. It was called automation then and the world was going to collapse because of it! Well, 60+ years later, here we are with the same concerns regarding Ai? The world did not collapse, yes, jobs were lost and others created. Many of the same concerns, negative rhetoric, etc seem to have surfaced. Like automation, the cat is out of the bag with Ai and it is best not to fight it but engulf it, before you are left behind. Think of it as a great efficiency tool that will usher you into the future.

Charlie’s Digs was a long time popular column in MND that centered on Mexican culture and history. Most of the columns were timeless. It would be good to get permission to access those 500+ columns to add to your archives.

AI used correctly (as MND is using Perplexity to search the article database) is a fantastic enhancement tool that can complement human logic. It should be used as a “force multiplier” to increase efficiency, particularly with tasks that do not require it to “think on its own”. It is remarkably useful for tasks where the result is to be improved, such as editing, or for performing time-consuming calculation tasks much more quickly than a human, and for many other useful applications. Utilizing it as a “hack” for items such as legal briefs or scientific peer review (among others) is perilous and foolhardy. A huge challenge will be keeping unscrupulous actors from utilizing it to try and completely replace human skills and intelligence, ie, many corporations and government entities.

Newspapers and sites need to project confidence, responsibility and accuracy and accountability. A journalist who writes is responsible for their work. A copy desk or editor can’t question Ai. AI promotes lazy journalism.
