Nice Reply Maria……Gringo here…Mexican GF that lives in Tampico…….I have been coming to Mexico for over 30 years now. When I arrive in Tampico, I’ll be there this weekend, the first place I go to is a restaurant for Tacos Al Pastor! Straight from the airport!

One more reason why I love living in Mexico. Not the food, but the ambiance, the vibe, the importance of the gathering together around a meal. Of course the food is the best in the world (prepared with love) but as stated, the kitchen/eating area is the heartbeat of a home, a restaurant, a street vendor and of course, all fiestas. Many US home kitchens are merely places where the takeout is unpacked or the grab and go snacks are stored. I love my new home.

Love this one! Since I read the article, I’ve been reflecting on our relationship with food. For many of us Mexicans, kitchens are the most important spaces in our homes. Life revolves around the kitchen table, where we engage in our most meaningful conversations, often ending with someone in tears. It’s the place where we did our homework as kids, with a telenovela playing in the background. Here, our mothers and grandmothers pampered us and imparted important life lessons, such as, “We should be thankful for the food on our plates and the roof over our heads, but since we aren’t millionaires, nothing goes to waste. So, ándale, come.” With that Catholic guilt on our shoulders, we learned in our kitchens that, while we are fortunate, life is fleeting. It’s our duty to enjoy our company and appreciate the little things in life, like eating together.

Thanks Travis. Great article. One of the very important measurements in determining where a country stands in terms of happiness is social connections. Restaurants are certainly a very important part of connecting people, but then we see it in so many other daily encounters in Mexico.— Mom’s and dad’s walking their children to school every morning. The Butchers in the Carnicerias constantly joking with each other as they work…. and on and on. We are lucky to live here.

There’s many reasons the Mexicans are so happy. Food is definitely one of them. But I think food is just a reflection. It’s almost always made fresh. From scratch. With care. And love. The food is as special as the Mexican people. And you really haven’t fully experienced Mexican food until you travel to about 20 different cities in several different states.
