This is not unique to Mexico. High rents unscrupulous landlord are also a problem. All the small shops in central Amsterdam are closing down to be turned into fancy eateries and this will happen in SMA with all the new hotels and upturns in tourist visiting who only want to pay with chip cards.

…. these small tiendas suffer because they are cash only. The OXXO and Kiosko stores accept payment cards of all kinds, credit or debit… OXXO Payment offers a way to pay for Amazon purchases..stuff you buy online. Mainly because of the fees and the fact their ‘business activities’ can be trcked, it’s mostly about taxes, so many small stores eschew these payment cards; many not even having a bank account or RFC #. Same with restaraunts, many are cash only for the same reason. So these OXXO stores fill in a need for Mexicans who have no bank account but need basic financial services to pay Telmex phone re-ups, CFE or internet bills. That’s why they are so popular.

I shop as much as possible at the neighborhood tienda around the corner from me in San Miguel de Allende. I’ve gotten to know the owner and her familia, and I feel like my money is going into the local community rather than to a corporation. I also patronize the pasteleria nearby, also family owned, rather than buy pasteles and galletas at the big grocery chain in town. I avoid Oxxco at all costs, though sometimes it’s impossible.

This is not unlike Caffenio pulling business away from the locally owned coffee stands and cafes. We have three fantastic, locally owned coffee cafes here in San Carlos, each with great coffee and a unique vibe, all run by young entrepreneurs. Then Caffenio came to town, and the drive-through lines them up. Always makes me grumpy.

I buy some things from local stores like this. I love how over time you end up meeting the whole family who often are working or spending time there.

We try to buy from our local ‘abarrote’ but there are limitations in what is offered. But having a place for the basics around the corner is such a blessing. Would hate to see them disappear.
