Amazing art and music; bustling urban pedestrian scene; 5 murders day/ave and constant police extortion of gringos. Its an exciting place but anything like a resort experience. A growing city with lots of buzz, but not recommended for firat-time visitors to Mexico or those with no Spanish. Having said all that, its really a continuation of San Diego, and many TJ locals and expats split their time. This is especially nice for expats as you can do all those US things (likeAmazon, CVS, mail) and enjoy the relative ease of being in San Diego. Ive lived in Mexico for a decade and find TJ/Rosarito/Ensenada much better for actual full-time kiving than Los Cabos. There are so many interesting, educated Mexicans here — and so much cross-cultural exchange — that strike up engaging converstions at every turn. You can actually walk around downtown (less car-centric) with all manner of people, find a secluded beach or peak, or enjoy world-class food (and best carne asada tacos in Mexico.) Also: best coastal climate in Mexico — never too hot.
