Four months after Walmart announced plans to spend US $6 billion to bring nine more of its stores to Mexico, the retail giant’s CEO and several top executives met with President Claudia Sheinbaum and emerged from the meeting pledging compliance with the administration’s comprehensive strategy for economic development known as Plan México.

“We met at the National Palace with Doug McMillon, President and CEO of Walmart Inc., and his team,” Sheinbaum wrote on her official X account on Tuesday. “They reaffirm their investments in our country and their commitment to joining Plan México.”

Walmart is well-positioned to support Plan México. Of its 33,000 suppliers, 85% are small and medium-sized Mexican companies, and 83% of the products it sells in the country are made in Mexico. That fits nicely with Plan México’s emphasis on domestic production and reduced dependence on imports, especially from Asia.

Local job creation is also a priority of Plan México, and Walmart’s announced investment is expected to bring 5,500 more direct jobs to the 200,000 people it now employs in Mexico.

Besides the opening of nine new stores in its Bodega Aurrerá, Sam’s Club, Walmart Supercenter, and Walmart Express formats, the investment will include the construction of two distribution centers in the state of Tlaxcala and the Bajío region. These centers will incorporate artificial intelligence and advanced robotics to optimize logistics.

The Walmart CEO’s meeting with Sheinbaum follows the resignation of Ignacio Caride as general director of Walmart Mexico and Central America last week.

Cristian Barrientos Pozo, current general director of Walmart Chile, will assume the position of general director for the Mexico and Central America unit on an interim basis while the company seeks a permanent replacement.

Mexico is the fourth-largest market globally for branded residences and third for developments currently under construction, according to a 2025 study by Onirius Hospitality Advisors.

These types of residences combine the exclusivity of recognized design brands — such as Armani, Nautica and Elie Saab, among others — with amenities and services equivalent to those of a five-star hotel. These properties are highly valued in the market and can fetch premiums of between 30% and 60% compared to non-branded developments.

“The success of the branded residence model lies in achieving an optimal balance between a hotel with a globally prestigious brand, first-class residences with year-round hotel service, and a rental program that supports the investment of the parties,” Luis Ruiz, partner at Onirius Hospitality Advisors, told the news magazine Expansión.

These properties offer high-level services such as concierge, wellness experiences, specialized gastronomy and rental programs.

Once concentrated in iconic luxury markets like Dubai and Miami, these types of residences now extend to other major cities worldwide. In Mexico, these cities include Mexico City, Los Cabos and beach destinations in Riviera Nayarit and the Mexican Caribbean.

Notably, Mexico is one of only two countries in Latin America (alongside Brazil) that are considered emerging powerhouses of branded residences.

According to Ruiz, Mexico offers the ideal conditions for the sustained growth of this model, as it continues to see international demand, has an established tourism industry and is close to the United States.

“The country offers unbeatable conditions for this type of development: connectivity, stable demand, and a consolidated offering of hotel brands that are now moving into the residential sector,” said Luis Ruiz, partner at Onirius.

With more than 50 projects in operation or development, Mexico is expected to exceed 50% growth in this real estate market by 2030, with the Caribbean as the main driver. The firm’s report revealed that the number of branded residences in the Riviera Maya is expected to grow a staggering 233% over the next five years.

Mexico’s growth in branded residences is part of a global trend showing that the population of ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWI) is expected to increase by almost 30% by 2027.

“High-net-worth buyers are no longer just looking for property. They’re investing in lifestyle, brand value and long-term growth,” Christopher Cina, Director of Sales at real estate agency Betterhomes, said.

According to the luxury hotelier Four Seasons, “people now prioritize home offices, wellness areas and community-driven amenities. It also reinforces the importance of safety and thoughtful management.”

Leading the trend is Dubai, with a whopping 160% growth in these types of residences over the past 10 years, followed by Miami, New York and Phuket.

Canadian low-cost airline Flair announced new non-stop flights between Mexico City (AICM) and two major Canadian cities: Toronto (YYZ) and Vancouver (YVR), starting late October 2025.

With these routes, Flair will become the first low-cost airline to offer direct connections between Canada and Mexico City, competing directly with Aeroméxico and Air Canada, but with considerably lower prices.

According to the carrier’s press release, prices start at CAD $160 (US $116) for the Mexico City-Toronto route, and CAD $141 (US $102) for the Mexico City-Vancouver route.

“For too long, flights to Mexico City have been out of reach for too many,” said Maciej Wilk, CEO of Flair Airlines, in the press release.

“We’re changing that. Flair is the only value airline in Canada, making it possible for customers to explore the capital of Mexico, and for Mexicans to discover all that Toronto and Vancouver have to offer.”

Both routes are set to operate three times a week per the following schedules:

YVR – AICM

Start: Oct. 27, 2025

Frequency: Mondays, Fridays and Sundays

Departure from YVR: 4:10 p.m. Arrival at AICM: 11:45 p.m.

Return from AICM: 12:45 a.m. Arrival at YVR: 4:55 a.m.

YYZ – AICM

Start: Oct. 28, 2025

Frequency: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays

Departure from YYZ: 7:15 p.m. Arrival at AICM: 11:45 p.m.

Acting Consul General of Mexico in Canada Luis Hernandez celebrated the news, saying that “Mexico and Canada have long enjoyed a close and dynamic relationship, connecting families, businesses and curious travellers who explore each other’s rich cultures,” adding that the new routes strengthen the link between the two nations.

These new routes add to Flair’s existing routes from Toronto and Vancouver to Cancún, Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. According to CEO Maciej Wilk, these routes have been “highly successful” and have not been negatively impacted by the new visa requirements that went into force in 2024 for Mexican visitors to Canada.

“The visa requirement is what it is but we do not have problems with filling up our aircraft in and out of Mexico. I’m not concerned,” he stressed.

Flair is a Canadian ultra-low-cost airline founded in 2005 and headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta. Initially operating charter and cargo flights, since 2017 it has focused on scheduled passenger flights, primarily within Canada and to destinations in the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.

Shakira has broken a record in Mexico by selling 1 million tickets for the Mexican dates of her 2025 world tour “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” (Women Don’t Cry Anymore), according to Mexico’s largest event promoter OCESA.

“This is an unprecedented figure and a statement of impact as powerful as the historic record of her 12 sold-out dates at Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City,” OCESA said in a press release. “One million tickets … in a country of 129 million inhabitants!” According to OCESA, Shakira is the first artist to sell this many tickets just within Mexico.

The Colombian song-and-dance artist achieved this record through 26 concerts scheduled in two separate phases, surpassing other international stars who have performed in Mexico, like Taylor Swift.

The first round of concerts took place in March, when she made history with seven consecutive sold-out performances. She also became the first artist in history to perform 12 concerts at the GNP Seguros Stadium in Mexico City (formerly Foro Sol), breaking the previous record of nine shows held by Grupo Firme at the same venue.

Due to the overwhelming demand following the initial phase, Shakira added more dates for August and September at the GNP Seguros Stadium and other major venues across the country. This second phase helped the singer and songwriter beat the 1 million mark.

Shakira’s milestone has also placed her at the top of such important charts as Billboard Boxscore, having accumulated more than US $130 million in revenue by mid-2025, underscoring her massive influence in the world of Latin music.

The superstar’s upcoming shows include Mexico City (Aug. 27, 29, and 30; Sept. 18), Monterrey (Aug. 23), Querétaro (Sept. 2 and 3), Guadalajara (Sept. 6 and 7), Puebla (Sept. 11 and 12), and Veracruz (Sept. 24).

Shakira takes over Mexico City with record-breaking concert tour

Dubbed “The Queen of Latin Pop,” Shakira, of Lebanese descent, began her musical career in the early 1990s after signing a contract with Sony Music Colombia at the age of 14. Her first album, “Pies Descalzos” (1995), sold more than 4 million copies and established her place in the music industry. But it was her 2001 album “Laundry Service” (also her first bilingual album) that gave her international fame with the single “Hips Don’t Lie.”

Throughout her career, Shakira has fused Latin and Arabic rhythms with pop and other genres, becoming the best-selling Latin artist in history, with more than 95 million albums sold.

Currently, Mexican singer and superstar Luis Miguel holds the Billboard record for the highest-grossing Latin tour of all time, with over 2.2 million tickets sold throughout dozens of countries. Time will tell if Shakira’s current tour will steal this record by the end of her tour this year.

The post Post-AMLO, Mexican household income is up and inequality is slightly down appeared first on Mexico News Daily

]]>
Mexican household income has grown significantly since 2016, according to a report by the National Survey of Household Income and Expenditure (ENIGH) 2024.

The report, which covered the years 2016-2024, revealed that these changes in income were driven primarily by increases in the minimum wage, the expansion of formal employment and the strengthening of social programs. The survey covers Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s presidency as well as the last two years of former President Enrique Peña Nieto’s term.

Published in July by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the survey reveals that between 2022 and 2024, the average quarterly household income reached 77,864 pesos, up 10.6% compared to the survey’s 2020-2022 edition.

Notably, the poorest 10% of households saw a substantial income increase since 2016 — over 35% — while earners in the top 10% saw their income drop by 8%.

Income inequality has slowly and steadily diminished since 2016, the survey showed. However, a significant income gap still remains between the highest and lowest brackets: In 2024, while the lowest-income households reported an average quarterly income of 16,795 pesos, those in the highest decile earned 236,095 pesos per quarter — roughly 14 times more.

Gender and regional inequality also persist. Between 2022-2024 women on average earned 34% less than men, meaning that for every 100 pesos a man earned, a woman earned 66 pesos. Disparity is also seen regionally, with households in the northern state of Nuevo León earning almost three times as much on average as those in Chiapas, a southern state that historically has lagged in various economic indicators. After Nuevo León, Mexico City concentrates the highest household income.

The main source of household income continues to be labor income (66%), followed by transfers (18%), which is household income that does not come directly from work activities or rental properties. It can include remittances, private or public scholarships, gifts from other households and social programs, among others.

According to INEGI, transfers recorded the greatest growth as a source of income between 2016 and 2024, with an increase of 26.5%.

As income grows, households are shrinking and getting older

The survey reported an 8.5% reduction in household size between 2016 and 2024. During this period, the number of household members under the age of 15 decreased by 24.8%, while the number of members aged 15 to 64 decreased by an average of 5.2%.

In contrast, the number of household members aged 65 and over increased by 21.3%. During this same period, the country saw a 10.2% drop in the number of income earners per household. Furthermore, among employed household members, there was a 3.4% decrease during the same period.

Nissan announces plans to close its historic Cuernavaca plant, moving production to Aguascalientes https://mexiconewsdaily.com/business/nissan-closes-cuernavaca-plant/ https://mexiconewsdaily.com/business/nissan-closes-cuernavaca-plant/#comments Thu, 31 Jul 2025 20:40:19 +0000 https://mexiconewsdaily.com/?p=545087 The state of Morelo plant, which began operations in 1966, was not only Nissan's first production facility in Mexico but also the brand's first outside Japan.

]]>
Nissan has officially announced the closure of its plant in the state of Morelos after nearly 60 years of operations, leaving the fate of thousands of employees up in the air.

The Cuernavaca Valley Industrial City (Civac) plant, located in Jiutepec, Morelos, just outside Cuernavaca, was Nissan’s first production facility outside of Japan. However, beginning in March 2026, the end of the Japanese fiscal year, production of all models currently assembled at Civac, including the NP300, Frontier and Versa, will be transferred to the more modern Aguascalientes automotive complex.

This Spanish-language video, possibly taken clandestinely and posted on X, captures the moment when employees of Nissan’s 59-year-old Cuernavaca plant first learned that they will soon be out of a job.

“Today, we have made the difficult but necessary decision that will allow us to become more efficient, more competitive, and more sustainable,” CEO of Nissan Motor Corporation Ivan Espinosa said, adding that relocating production to Aguascalientes, the capital of the central state of the same name, will ensure the continuity of key models in a facility with greater technological capacity.

This decision is part of the global “Re:Nissan” restructuring plan, which seeks to consolidate production and optimize the company’s efficiency worldwide. According to the newspaper El Universal, Nissan plans to reduce its non-China global production capacity from 3.5 million units to 2.5 million units yearly.

Though Nissan is not leaving Mexico, its current plans mark the end of an era.

The Cuernavaca plant accounted for approximately 11% of Nissan’s total production in Mexico and had produced more than 6.5 million vehicles since its opening in 1966, marking the beginning of the brand’s international expansion outside of Japan. Over the years, its vehicles have not only been distributed in Mexico but have also reached international markets, including Japan. The Nissan Tsubame was exported in 1993, marking the first model manufactured in Mexico and sold in the Asian country.

Since its opening, Civac has boosted development for the local community and acted as a benchmark for the Mexican automotive industry, which is why the move has raised concerns about the future employment of the plant’s direct employees. The company did not mention in its announcements how many employees will be affected, but the newspaper El País reported that figures from Nissan itself put the number of Civac workers at 4,800 in 2016.

Nissan says it is committed to ensuring a respectful transition for affected employees. However, it has not announced any specific plans about severance, relocation or retirement plans, leaving workers feeling uncertain.

Morelos Governor Margarita González Saravia and state Minister of Economic Development Víctor Sánchez Trujillo announced plans to meet with Nissan representatives to ensure compliance with  labor rights and to facilitate a fair transition. The action plan includes placement of employees in other automotive companies in the state, a special program through the National Employment Service (SNE) for new job opportunities, and support for entrepreneurship, leveraging employees’ technical skills.

In an interview, González added that her government will seek to bring in another automotive company to replace Nissan.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has ruled out damages following the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday. Yet, she warned of rising sea levels along Mexico’s Pacific coast.

Mexico, along with the United States and Chile, had issued a tsunami warning soon after the earthquake.

The Mexican Navy (Semar) had reported at a Security Cabinet meeting that Wednesday morning would be the likeliest time for any concern, due to a slight rise in sea level in certain areas of the eastern Pacific Ocean. However, it reiterated that the information did not imply major risks.

Earlier, the Tsunami Warning Center (CAT) of the Semar issued an alert bulletin to update sea level fluctuations at various points along the Mexican Pacific coast. Mexican authorities recommended that the population stay away from beaches and coastal areas and exercise extreme caution in maritime activities, noting that the alert remained active only as a preventive measure.

In the advisory, Semar mentioned the variations in wave heights at key cities along Mexico’s Pacific coast. These include Ensenada, Baja California, which recorded a height of 0.70 meters at 6:15 a.m. (12:15 GMT), and Salina Cruz in Oaxaca, with a height of 0.25 meters at 6:14 a.m. (12:14 GMT).

Also mentioned were Clarión Island (one of the Revillagigedo Islands off the Colima coast), with a height of 0.25 meters at 6:20 a.m. (12:20 GMT), and Manzanillo, Colima, with 1.15 meters at 6:15 a.m. (12:15 GMT).

No material damage or injuries were reported at these sites.

During the tsunami warning, dozens of people, including locals and tourists, crowded the Mazatlán promenade to watch the sea, ignoring official warnings to stay away from the coastal area for safety reasons. The warnings urged people not to approach the beaches or the seawall, due to the risk of sudden currents and changes in sea level.

Despite these warnings, on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, groups of families and friends could be seen sitting and walking along the boardwalk. The atmosphere was festive, according to images shared on social media.

The Semar temporarily closed several Pacific Ocean ports as a precautionary measure in response to the tsunami warning. These include:

Closed to large vessels:

  • Zihuatanejo, Guerrero
  • Puerto Peñasco, Sonora
  • Puerto Chiapas, Chiapas

Closed to small vessels:

  • Cabo San Lucas, Baja California
  • Puerto Peñasco, Sonora
  • Zihuatanejo, Guerrero
  • Chacala, Nayarit
  • Puerto Chiapas, Chiapas

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake struck at a depth of 19.3 kilometers (12.2 miles) and occurred 126 kilometers (78 miles) east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city of 165,000 people on the coast of Avacha Bay, Russia.

The USGS said it was one of the 10 most powerful earthquakes on record.

Mexico is working on an artificial intelligence (AI) language model to help the country integrate into the new data-based global economic order, Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard announced on Tuesday.

The announcement came during the presentation of the upcoming Mexico IA+ Accelerated Investment international event, scheduled to take place in Mexico City on Nov. 12 and 13.

Backed by the giant technology company Nvidia, the event will serve as the primary launch platform for Mexico’s artificial intelligence project, including the presentation of its large language model (LLM).

“AI is the modern alphabet,” Ebrard said. “Either we hurry up and master that alphabet, or it’s going to be a huge disadvantage [for us] in the new world arrangement we’re seeing emerge today.”

This AI initiative follows President Claudia Sheinbaum’s announcement regarding the upcoming launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Laboratory as one of the 18 actions outlined in Plan México. Sheinbaum has stressed that investment and scientific and technological development are a fundamental part of her administration.

Meanwhile, Marcio Aguiar, Nvidia’s director for Latin America, confirmed the company’s collaboration in the Mexican AI project through training to develop specialized talent.

“It is essential for the country to train people so that it can be more competitive globally and, obviously, position Mexico as one of the main players,” Aguiar said. He also explained that the model will draw data from Mexican culture and history.

According to Ebrard, Mexico has two key advantages for the global technology sector: a young workforce eager to enter the industry, and 5.5 million economic units that can connect with this talent, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

The government’s ambition is to make its AI project accessible to over 5 million university students and more than 5 million businesses, with the expectation of seeing “visible and tangible results” in two years’ time, Ebrard said.

However, adequate infrastructure is needed to support this initiative.

According to the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), investment in data centers could reach US $9.2 billion, potentially generating up to $27 billion in indirect economic impact. Adriana Rivera Cerecedo, director of the Mexican Data Center Association, told news agency EFE that this means installing more than 70 data centers offering colocation or cloud services.

Currently, the large language models (LLM) sector is dominated by companies like OpenAI, Google and Microsoft, all based in the United States. Other countries have developed their own LLMs, including France with Mistral, China with DeepSeek and Chile with LatamGPT.

LatamGPT is intended as a collaborative regional project developed by the National Center for Artificial Intelligence in Chile (CENIA) and also supported by Mexico and Nvidia.

Mexico to launch simplified electronic visa platform in August https://mexiconewsdaily.com/travel/electronic-mexican-tourist-visas/ https://mexiconewsdaily.com/travel/electronic-mexican-tourist-visas/#comments Tue, 29 Jul 2025 21:00:21 +0000 https://mexiconewsdaily.com/?p=544252 For visitors from most parts of Asia and Africa, the new e-visa eliminates the need for an interview or a physical stamp in the traveler’s passport, and aims to streamline tourism ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The post Mexico to launch simplified electronic visa platform in August appeared first on Mexico News Daily

]]>
Starting in August, Mexico will launch an electronic visa platform for foreign tourists that will streamline the application process by eliminating the need for in-person visits to consular offices and allowing applicants to complete all requirements online.

Citizens of exempt countries or with a valid passport from the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and the Schengen area, do not need a pre-authorized visa for a tourism visit and are therefore not impacted by the new e-visa.

The e-visa process will enable the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) to create digital files with biometric and electronic data, as well as digital certificates for each traveler.

The e-visa is not valid for travel by land or sea. It is intended for foreigners who require a visa to enter Mexico and only applies to foreigners entering via air for tourism, cultural or family purposes. It does not allow any work activities and is valid for a maximum of 180 days.

For visitors from most parts of Asia and Africa, the e-visa eliminates the need for an interview or a physical stamp in the traveler’s passport. Once approved, the visa can be downloaded online.

In a statement published in the Official Journal of the Federation (DOF) the National Migration Institute (INM) also sought to “simplify, unify and make transparent” several procedures related to the issuance of immigration documents: including obtaining a regional visitor card, regularization for humanitarian reasons, and notifications of marital status, name, nationality, and place of work.

Moreover, it reduced the maximum processing time for notifications of name or nationality changes to three days, and for issuing immigration documents to no later than 10 days.

The new e-visa will cost 575 pesos (US $32), payable online. Infants under two years old are exempt from the payment.

In contrast, the US is hiking its visa prices

While Mexico is moving to make tourism visits more convenient, the price of most non-immigrant visas to enter the United States is set to more than double in 2026, as part of  U.S. President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. These visas include tourist, student and work visas.

“No-petition visas,” which include tourist and student permits, will increase from US $160 to $410 next year. Meanwhile, petition-based categories like those of temporary workers or trainees, will increase from $190 to $440 in 2026.

In a statement criticizing the fee hikes, Geoff Freeman, president of the U.S. Travel Association (USTA), said: “Raising fees on lawful international visitors amounts to a self-imposed tariff on one of our nation’s largest exports: international travel spending.”
