I think the picture is an extract from Diego Rivera‘s mural in the Palacio Nacional, which shows the traditional tianguis of Tenochtitlan, where you could haggle then pay with cacao beans. Can anyone confirm the picture source?

I was also wondering if this is right -> if you eat 2 pounds of Tortillas a day, you’re gorging yourself and become a gordito/a very soon. Here at home, a kilo (slightly more than2 lbs) usually lasts us a week and we’re a family of four.

I think Fernando got it right. The photo shows a metate not a molcajete. Maybe a good kitchen needs one of each…Cheers

I’d love to see an article about that amazing picture at the beginning of the article – like a map of Tenochitlan. Enlarge the foto and explain what some of the features were, how they got around, how they lived their daily lives, etc.

My first thought upon seeing the photo of the “molcajete” was: that’s a METATE, not a molcajete.
